FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Minneapolis, MN (January 23, 2009) –SUPERVALU is voluntarily recalling Happy Tails and Shoppers Valu multi-flavored dog biscuit products because they may contain peanut butter that has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The precautionary move follows a nationwide recall issued by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) of peanut butter and peanut paste produced in its Blakely, Georgia processing facility.

According to the FDA, pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Well animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The products were sold at some SUPERVALU banner stores including ACME, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, and Shaw’s/Star Market. The identified items have not been directly linked to the salmonella outbreak. However, because the safety of customers, and in this case their pets, is a top priority and out of an abundance of caution, SUPERVALU has voluntarily recalled the products.

No other products are currently included in this recall. Based on information from the FDA at this time, the peanut butter for sale in SUPERVALU banner stores is not affected by the recall issued by Peanut Corporation of America.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- January 30, 2009 -- Salix LLC of Deerfield Beach, FL a manufacturer of rawhide dog chew products, is voluntarily recalling its Healthy Hide 6” Peanut Butter Filled Shank Bone because it contains peanut butter made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is the focus of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigation into potential salmonella contamination of peanut butter and paste. This product therefore has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. While the risk of animals contracting salmonellosis is minimal, there is risk to humans from handling these products. People handling dry pet food and/or treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the chews or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The voluntarily recalled peanut butter-filled shank bone was sold through National Retailers in the U.S.

The product comes in a clear plastic bag with attached header card and the name Healthy Hide is on the front. The package is a 1-count 6” Peanut Butter Filled Shank Bone and the Universal Product Code is 0-91093-33479-0. All packages are marked with one of the following lot codes: between CP 20081508 and CP 20012209. This code can be found on the backside of the package.

Salix is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to this or any other products.

Peanut Butter Dog treats recalled

If your pet is vomiting, lethargic, diarrhea or lack of appetite -- you have an emergency situation, your pet needs to see a Veterinarian NOW.

Please don’t take a chance, if something in your pantry contains peanut butter, don’t eat it! The only company that claims safety at this point is Laura Scudders.

There are 3 different recall notices posted below. If you bought peanut butter dog biscuits from Petsmart, those are on recall as well. Ditto for Peanut butter filled cows hoofs, peanut butter filled rawhide bones.

Justice for Nitro

I received an e mail last night from a woman telling of Nitro’s Story.
Its so sad and shocking, I feel ill from it.

I have abbreviated the story for this blog. You can see the entire story, as well as where to fax/mail letters re: Prosecution of the involved trainer...

Nitro was a beautiful rott, seen here on the left, who was in training in Ohio at a seemingly professional kennel. The trainer Steve Croley, told Nitro’s owners that he was doing well, when in fact Nitro & 18 other dogs were being starved to death. Nitro and 6 other dogs died, 12 more are in serious condition. There should be 19 charges for the death and torture this man put these animals thru.
He is being charged with 4 counts of misdemeanor cruelty!

Then take a few moments of your time to write a letter to the Judge and Prosecutor asking them to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. It didn’t have to end like this. Croley could have simply returned the dogs to their owners.
